The FDNY is looking to make sure New Yorkers safely enjoy the Fourth of July holiday weekend, as fireworks are often the cause of many injuries.
The FDNY is activating its Fireworks Enforcement Unit, which sends fire marshals out of state to popular locations where fireworks are sold - particularly in Pennsylvania. These marshals look for New York license plates in those areas and then pull them over as they're driving back to New York.
Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh says that her department typically sees spikes in medical calls on the days leading up to the holiday, as well as the day after.
"Every year, we see incredibly serious injuries... it can be really dangerous," said Kavanagh.
