A fire broke out in an apartment building housing six families in Crown Heights, according to the FDNY.
Neighbors tell News 12 that the fire started in the basement of the building. One resident says they learned about the fire happening right below them in an unusual way.
“The basement was on fire,” said resident Lamont Dinkins. “Smoke was coming out of the floorboards.”
Red Cross representatives arrived on the scene to aid those who live in the building with any recovery and relocation efforts. Many of those families had pets inside of the building.
One cat was rescued from the building during the fighting of the fire; fire officials say that no one was injured as a result of the flames.
