Some families across the five boroughs are recovering from the aftermath of multiple fires that broke out over the holiday weekend.

One of those fires destroyed the inside of a Mill Basin home. The fire department is still investigating this fire, and want to urge New Yorkers to take the proper precautions to stay safe.

According to the FDNY, one-third of home fires happen during the months of December, January, and February, adding that space heaters can be the cause of winter fires.

Fire officials say you should never use an extension cord with a space heater, and it's important to turn it off and unplug it whenever it is not in use. They also advise to never leave a burning candle unattended, and to be wary of flammable materials like mattresses, bedding, and furniture.
