FDNY, Red Cross sound alarm for Fire Prevention Week
The FDNY and Red Cross of Greater New York are teaming up for Fire Prevention Week to prevent tragedies.
According to the Red Cross, about 4,000 people die each year due to fires. The agency says the figure is more than the amount of people who die due to natural disasters yearly.
The Red Cross and FDNY are holding events during Fire Prevention Week, which runs October 7 through October 13. The Red Cross is giving out free batteries to keep smoke detectors working.
The agencies recommend people prepare "go bags" that contain important documents and medications in case of a fire evacuation. Experts also say families should prepare a plan in case of a fire and make sure smoke detectors are installed on every floor.
