The weak economy is forcing the New York City Fire Department to cut overnight hours at four firehouses, including Engine Company 271, on Himrod Avenue, in Bushwick.
Despite some residents' concerns, the fire department needs to cut $60 million from its budget, and eliminating hours from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. at the four stations will trim costs by about $9 million.
The fire department says concerned residents have 45 days to pose legitimate concerns, but the service reduction is currently slated to go into effect Jan. 17. The department will also reduce hiring and training.
