One person is dead after a fire broke out on East 96th Street in East Flatbush on Tuesday, according to fire officials.
Fire officials say they responded to the fire at approximately 1:56 p.m.
The FDNY said they were able to extinguish the fire and discovered a 64-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive in the basement.
Monique Smith says she is lucky to be alive after escaping her first floor apartment.
"We opened the front door. He said, 'No don't get out that way. Go out the window,' So that's what we did. We went out the window," said Smith.
Chris Kirkland told News 12 he believes his brother Hugh Kirkland is the victim. He is the owner of the building.
Kirkland also told News 12 that he tried rescue him, but couldn't get close enough.
"Nothing I can say, I was afraid a little bit but it is what it is," he told News 12.
Fire officials say they pronounced the man dead at the scene. A medical examiner will determine how the man died.
News 12 is told an infant suffered minor injuries from smoke inhalation but is expected to be OK.
Fire officials say there were working smoke detectors in the building. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
