A fire ripped through a synagogue in Bensonhurst this evening, destroying donated goods that were meant to help those in need.

It happened on the corner of West 1st Street and Quentin Road. First responders say a man and two children were in the building when they smelled smoke. "The fire started on the first floor in the rear in the storage area, where they keep goods that they would give out to the orphans and homeless people in the area," says FDNY Deputy Fire Chief Roger Sakowich. Fire officials say nobody was injured and no torahs or holy items were damaged by the flames. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
