EMTs, paramedics and local officials are pushing for a change in legislation that they say will help keep first responders safe.

Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes has joined workers in their fight to make assaulting an EMS worker while he or she is on the job a felony in every case. Under the current law, an assault is only treated as a felony if the victim sustains a serious or permanent injury.

According to the union that represents EMTs, roughly 60 to 70 workers are injured every year.

Sen. Marty Golden (R-Brooklyn) says the group hopes to have a bill passed within the next five months.
