The only food bank in Fairfield County says its food budget is in the red and its shelves are in danger of running bare.
The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County provides food at less than 25 cents a pound to 90 organizations from Wilton to Greenwich, including senior centers, domestic violence and crisis centers and homeless centers.
Executive director Kate Lombardo says with less food coming in, she's already blowing past her budget this year - buying more to fill the shelves.
Food bank organizers say inflation is something of a double whammy on their food supply. It means less donations coming in and higher prices on what the food bank now has to purchase. They say the pandemic is partly to blame.
Warehouse manager Willie Johnson says shipping costs have quadrupled since earlier in the pandemic.
"When we order food now, sometimes the shipping almost costs as much as the product itself," said Johnson. "Now it's $350 a pallet. Just for the pallet. And then on top of that is the cost of the food that rests on the pallet."
Lombardo is confident she can weather the storm, but is asking for the community's generosity, big or small.
