A pilot program being offered by the Food Bank of New York City and Bide-A-Wee has provided more than 6,000 pounds of pet food at dozens of pantries in Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens.
Dijohn Griffin says he spends a significant amount of money on dog food weekly. He says the savings will help him keep some extra cash in his wallet. "I heard about the free dog food and it really helps a lot ? [paying for dog food] used to set me back $60 a week.?
Bags of dog food are going fast as organizers are hoping the demand will help to continue with the program.
