A funeral service held in Brooklyn Tuesday honored the life and legacy of the man who founded the Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill.
Lowell Hawthorne was laid to rest Tuesday during a service beginning at the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn.
Services began with prayer and song as the room filled with loved ones, friends and people whose lives Hawthorne had impacted over the years.
On Dec. 2, the Westchester native was found dead in his factory in the Claremont section of the Bronx with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
He had reportedly been dealing with financial hardships.
He came to the U.S in 1981 from Jamaica, and first worked as an accountant for the NYPD before opening his first bakery on E. Gun Hill Road in the Bronx.
The franchise grew to more than 120 stores in 10 different states.
He's received numerous awards over the years and was featured on the TV show “Undercover Boss.”
He even created a foundation which has awarded more than 300 scholarships to aspiring students in the U.S and Jamaica.
Hawthorne was 57 years old.
