A gas leak at a BP gas station forced police to shut down Jackson Avenue at East 149th Street for about two hours this morning.

The FDNY and a hazmat crew responded after a gas odor was reported. Officials began checking sewer lines for the source of the smell and say one tested positive for fuel.

Crews cleared the sewer lines and opened several fire hydrants in the area to prevent pressure from building up.

Residents say the incident is a major concern because the station is located across the street from a school and is surrounded by apartment buildings.

Firefighters and officials from the Department of Environmental Conservation stayed on the scene for several hours investigating the source of the leak. They say a past oil spill at the same location may have led to the positive reading.
