Gate owners defend themselves over death of 12-year-old
The owners of a Brownsville complex where a 12-year-old boy was crushed to death by a parking gate are defending themselves.
Omni New York LLC released a statement saying in part, "Any allegations that we were at all responsible is absurd. It is very unfortunate that a dangerous game of chicken resulted in a tragic death...Naturally, we have turned over all videos to the police department and are cooperating fully with the NYPD."
Yakim McDaniels was killed Sunday while playing on the gate with friends. Many tenants said the death could have been prevented if there were more recreational activities for kids in the area.
A spokesperson for Omni also said that the company has built playgrounds and community space for after school programs.
