Gov. Cuomo lashes out at LI senators over Amazon deal gone bad
Gov. Andrew Cuomo lashed out at fellow Democrats in the state Senate who he said didn't fight hard to protect the deal the city had struck with Amazon.
Speaking at an Albany radio station, the governor had blistering words for opponents of the deal, among them State Sen. Mike Gianaris of Queens.
Gov. Cuomo also specifically mentioned Long Island's six-member Democratic Senate delegation in his criticism.
He says the Senate did not stand up to a handful of legislators from New York City who were able to block the Amazon deal.
Analysts say the Long Island Democratic senators should form an alliance with Democrats from Westchester, Rockland and other suburban counties, as more than half of the 40 Democrats in the state Senate represent New York City. Analysts argue the suburbs would have a stronger voice within the overall Democratic conference.
State Sen. John Brooks, of Massapequa, says he doesn't believe a break-away coalition of suburban legislators would be effective. He also believes it's unfair to criticize Long Island's delegation for Amazon leaving.
Amazon's decision to pull out of a deal to build a second headquarters in Long Island City meant the loss of an estimated 25,000 new jobs. The deal would have also come with large tax incentives for the company.
Republicans also criticized the newly elected Democratic majority in senate for the Amazon deal, saying that would have never happened if the GOP maintained control of the chamber.
