Armed with spray paint of their own, Graffiti Free NYC has taken over Westchester Avenue. The organization, which provides free graffiti removal services, is painting over storefronts along the street's business strip. Residents say the area has been plagued by increasing vandalism. Members of Community Board 9 have joined forces with the 43rd Precinct, as well as The Bronx District Attorney's Office, to curb the graffiti. However, board members say many businesses fail to alert police after their stores have been hit. Volunteers also say extra police patrols have been added to areas along Castle Hill Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard. Store owners interested in getting rid of graffiti can call Community Board 9 at 718-823-3034.
