A local group is calling on the NYPD to hold dangerous drivers accountable for their actions in an effort to keep Brooklyn streets safer.
Transportation Alternatives says it wants police to adopt a strict no tolerance policy against drivers involved in accidents. They point to specific incidents, including a crash in Park Slope two years ago where a man named Hutch Ganson was struck and sent into a coma while walking his daughter to school.
According to the group, studies show that from 2000 to 2009, more people were killed in traffic accidents than murdered by guns across the city. They also note that in most of the hit-and-run accident reports from this year, drivers were let go after telling police they didn't realize they hit anyone.
