A group made up of various organizations protested this week to try and save Coney Island.

The organizations want to keep their favorite attractions at Coney Island. However, they say Thor Equities, which bought the land, started tripling rents, changed locks and refused to renew leases.

Coney Island is currently zoned for 61 acres of amusement activities, but the city?s new zoning proposal would shrink it down to only nine acres.

Thor Equities spent more than $100 million buying up land at Coney Island and plans to replace much of the amusement district with hotels, hi-rise condos and malls.

Those protesting say all of the amusement activities should stay.

The future of Coney Island is expected to be voted on later this year.
