New York City's Health Department held its official 'Zika Day of Action' campaign Wednesday to educate New Yorkers about the Zika virus.

Volunteers and members of the Health Department gathered at 22 locations around the city, including in Brooklyn.

Dozens of outreach teams were at transit hubs of communities with ties to Zika-affected countries. They provided education materials on Zika testing and mosquito prevention, according to a press release from the NYC Health Department.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there have been 174 travel-associated cases of the Zika Virus in the state of New York as of June 15. 

Officials with the CDC say the virus is spread through the bite of an Aedes Aegypti mosquito, but can also be spread sexually. 

The virus has been linked to birth defects in babies. 

Volunteers spent the morning handing out information to commuters Wednesday.
