Dozens of people had to be rescued Tuesday after a heavy rainfall caused flooding around the state.

The downpour forced the closure of several roadways, including of parts of routes 1 and 9 between Newark and Jersey City and Route 3 near Secaucus and Easter Rutherford. Police and emergency crews had to rescue dozens of stranded motorists in Bayonne, Hackensack, North Bergen and Fairview.

Firefighters using a high-water rescue vehicle rescued more than 100 employees of several businesses on the 800 block of Fairview Avenue in Fairview who were trapped by the flooding.

About a dozen homes in Secaucus took on water due to the flooding.

Homeowner Mark Zaremba says that around 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon his finished basement was flooded, by about 7 inches of water.

“Everything just came up. Everybody’s backyards flooded out. Both sides of the street and unfortunately we got water in our houses,” Zaremba says.

New Jersey saw over 2 inches of rain Tuesday, according to News 12 meteorologists.

More rain is expected for Wednesday afternoon and evening.
