Several community groups and schools in Highbridge have joined together for a new 'stop the violence' initiative in the neighborhood.
Chauncy Young, of United Parents of Highbridge, says one specific crime did not spark the initiative. "The idea is we're trying to say each of us has a responsibility as community members, family members, business owners, as children, to keep the peace," said Young.
The initiative includes a 'safe-zone' program which allows businesses to volunteer to post signs showing it's a safe location for kids in trouble. A special art contest involving the neighborhood schools is also part of the initiative, with the theme of peace. The artwork will go on display at a neighborhood fair next month.
