Housing flap leaves Flatbush grandma homeless before Thanksgiving
A Flatbush grandmother claims she's been wrongfully evicted from her home of the past 20 years -- but according to her landlord, she owes a lot in back rent.
Joy Noel, who is in her 80s, says she's homeless now, seeking help from the Flatbush Tenant Coalition. The advocacy group aims to get her back into her apartment.
"I would appreciate if I could spend my Thanksgiving in my own home," Noel says.
That was at 585 East 21st St. in Flatbush until July, while she was away on a medical emergency leave.
When she returned home after the three-month leave, she says her landlord had removed all of her belongings, and she found someone else living there.
The landlord changed the locks and stuffed her stuff into a storage unit, too.
Noel says the landlord claims she refused to sign her lease and filed a court case -- but she says she never received the lease or news of the case because her name was misspelled in court documents.
But a spokesperson for Carnegie Management says Noel hasn't paid her rent in five years -- racking up more than $75,000 in overdue bills.
According to the spokesperson, Noel's Section 8 housing voucher was canceled because she was hoarding and creating a hazardous condition.
The spokesperson says Noel refused to sign her lease, and all eviction and court notices were sent to her home, multiple times, in the mail.
