New York City announced the expansion of its free IDNYC program to allow for the enrollment of children ages 10 to 13 years old.
The program gives residents access to museums and culture institutions across the city, as well as discounts on a number of helpful services.
Sonia Daly, of IDNYC, said, “Younger children need identification too, especially middle schoolers that currently don't have an ID of their own. It's a safety issue for parents so that they know that their child has a valid, city-issued ID."
Nearly 1.2 million New Yorkers are already taking advantage of the program.
There are some concerns about the program after a couple was recently detained by immigration officials upstate after showing their municipal ID, but local activists say it shouldn’t stop people from getting one.
