Starting on Monday, undocumented immigrants will be able to obtain driver's licenses at their local Department of Motor Vehicle's office.
Attorney Iymari Casta says it's a sad reality for many of her immigrant clients who are also unlicensed. "It is a struggle for people who live away from schools or away from the job or a supermarket and there's no public transportation," said Casta.
Casta hopes that all of this will change-- now that the new law will take effect. "This is going to change people's lives," said Casta.
New Yorkers over the age of 16 will be eligible to apply for a driver's license, regardless of their immigration status. However, a valid ID is required to apply. This means an unexpired passport, a foreign license or a document issued by a consulate. Applicants don't need a Social Security number and can show a utility bill or taxes to prove that state residence.
Bronx residents say the new law will help improve the lives of many family members and friends. However, they say as much as there are benefits to the new state law, there's a mounting concern for many immigrants who fear deportation.
Still, Casta warns of the risk of driving without a license. It is a crime, that if caught, could lead to an arrest.
Advocates say the new law will make roads and highways safer.
