Thousands of Haitians could see their temporary protected status in the U.S. revoked due to new federal laws, but they are not all going out without a fight.
TPS has for years protected certain groups of immigrants who faced hardships in their country. But the Department of Homeland Security announced that the TPS termination for Haitians is July 22, 2019.
The government says the temporary but extraordinary conditions by the 2010 earthquake in Haiti no longer exist.
But now a judge will decide if some 50,000 Haitian immigrants can stay in the U.S. Monday marked the first trial day of the Saget v. Trump case on the matter.
People gathered in Downtown Brooklyn Monday to rally over the issue. Immigrants like Gerand Michaund find their fate up in the air.
Michaund came to America nine years ago looking for a better life. "I stayed here because after the earthquake I lost my job, I lost everything, but I stayed here to rebuild my life," he says.
