A jury found Christian Morales guilty of manslaughter Thursday in the 2014 stabbing death of Carlos Santos in the Bronx.
Investigators say surveillance video captured the attack, which prosecutors attributed to a dispute over a girl.
Morales stabbed Santos multiple times, prosecutors say.
He fled to Mexico after the incident, where he was arrested on unrelated drug charges and sent back to New York to face justice for Santos' slaying.
The jury also found Morales not guilty of the more serious charge of second-degree murder.
Members of Santos' family say they were hoping for a murder conviction, but are satisfied that the manslaughter conviction will still put Morales behind bars for a long time.
He faces a maximum of up to 25 years in prison at his sentencing, which is scheduled for June 23.
