The lawyer of a young woman who claims two NYPD detectives raped her in an unmarked police van said Tuesday that the incident left her traumatized and scared to go out in public.
"She's terrified," says Michael David, the victim's attorney. "She's afraid they're on the streets, and she doesn't really want to leave her room. She's just confined to her house since this thing happened."
Detectives Eddie Martins and Richard Hall pulled the 18-year-old over in a Gravesend park and found marijuana in her car, News 12 has previously reported. Then, the officers allegedly took her into custody and drove off, leaving her two friends behind.
That's when the victim's lawyer says the officers both sexually assaulted her.
A rape kit tested positive for the DNA of both detectives, who were released on bail Monday. They face charges including rape and kidnapping.
The detectives' defense attorneys have said the young woman had consensual sex with them to escape arrest. The lawyers did not immediately respond to News 12 for comment Tuesday.
Both suspects are due back in court Jan. 18 and could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
