The largest and most technologically advanced planetarium in the Western Hemisphere will make its debut this weekend at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City.

The Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium and LSC Giant Dome Theater opens Saturday. Only two planetariums in Japan and one in China are larger than it.

“Big matters when it comes to planetariums because we simulate what it's like to be out in the night sky. If we were out in Montana or Wyoming where we didn't have buildings or light pollution like we do in the New York area, you'd be able to see this magnificent sky,” Liberty Science Center CEO Paul Hoffman said.

The new planetarium boasts a resolution of 88 million pixels, a lighting system that can produce over 281 trillion individual colors and new speakers capable of producing 30,000 watts of digital sound.

“It has 10 projectors, which throw 88 million pixels at the humongous screen and seamlessly sews the image together,” Hoffman said.
