The Long Island Game Farm is struggling to feed dozens of animals during the COVID-19 outbreak.
Normally, the Long Island Game Farm would be a busy place this time of year. There would be a lot of spring cleanup work taking place getting ready for opening day, which is always in mid-April. For a farm, it also means new babies. But like a lot of Long Island businesses, it has no idea when it will be allowed to open.
It also still has a lot of expenses to pay without any income coming in - in this case, it's feeding and maintains dozens of animals.
"Financially, we're in a scary place because we don't know what's happening in the future," says Melinda Novak of the Long Island Game Farm.
The Long Island Game Farm opened 50 years ago by a husband and wife. Their daughter, Melinda, now runs what is one of Long Island's most well known tourist attractions.
"The biggest fear is how do we plan for something when we don't know what's happening? When are we going to open, when will the money start flowing? With the GoFundMe page, people have been so generous talking about how they love coming here with their families. The animals and the birds here, it's like a nature preserve. We just can't wait to be open and have people coming here again and enjoying the animals," says Novak.
