Police say a deliveryman was killed when an elevator crushed him Monday in East Flatbush.

The incident happened just before noon inside KP Farm Market at 1887 Nostrand Ave., according to police.

Officials say the 62-year-old man was delivering food to the basement of the building when a makeshift elevator collapsed onto him.

The man was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Investigators were waiting to notify the victim's family before releasing his identity.

Officials with the Department of Buildings say the structure that collapsed on the victim was a handmade hoist that is illegal and not approved by the DOB. Officials say the hoist was made out of a chain and other materials to be able to transport goods between the basement and first floor. They say two workers were operating the device when it collapsed, pinning one of the workers underneath it.

The DOB says a permit is required to attain a legal elevator. It also says it ordered the owner of the building to immediately stop using the device.

News 12 tried reaching out to a number listed as the CEO for the Brooklyn-based KP Farm Market, but those calls went unanswered.

The store remained open Monday night.
