(08/08/08) BEDFORD-STUYVESANT - A man was rushed to the hospital Friday after he fell through a subway grate in Bed-Stuy.
The man suffered severe bruises and possible rib fractures during the fall. "His pain was more to the side," says an EMS worker, adding that he also had "severe pain to the neck and ribcage."
Hector Santana, who lives near where the accident happened at Marcy and Willoughby avenues, says the subway grates can be easily tampered with.
"They have all been loose," says Santana of the grates. "I have seen people jump in to ? get quarters, nickels or keys that they drop in."
The FDNY advises residents to be use caution around the grates, which it says are aging and corroded.
