Kwauhuru Govan was sentenced today to 25 years to life in prison for the 2004 slaying of a Brooklyn teen.

Sharabia Thomas, 17, was strangled then left naked and dismembered in a Bushwick alley 14 years ago.

Govan defended himself in court today, saying he was innocent.

“I’m not a violent man,” he said.

But DNA evidence said otherwise, reviving the cold case back in 2016 with new technology that connected Govan’s DNA to samples taken from Thomas’ fingernails. Govan was serving time in Florida for armed robbery when the Brooklyn case caught up with him.

Govan stared straight ahead, emotionless, as Thomas’ family members addressed him in court.

Govan is awaiting trial in another murder case - the 2005 slaying of Rashawn Brazell, who was found dismembered in a subway tunnel.
