Family and friends of a Brooklyn man shot and killed by an NYPD officer a year ago held a march and vigil Friday.
Police say Akai Gurley was walking into a staircase with a female companion on Nov. 20, 2014, when investigators say he was shot and killed. Those honoring Gurley's life Friday lit candles and placed signs and pictures in front of the building where he was killed.
NYPD Officer Peter Liang is charged with shooting Gurley. Investigators say it happened inside a dimly lit stairwell as Liang was patrolling the New York City Housing Authority complex with his partner. In February, a grand jury indicted him in the case.
Gurley's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in May. Brooklyn DA Kenneth Thompson says the shooting was not reported to police right away and that Liang remained on the eighth floor and argued with his partner about calling in the shooting.
Liang's attorney says that claim is preposterous and says the shooting was accidental.
His trial is expected to begin in January.
Last week, family members of Gurley told News 12 they are seeking civil damages against the officer and his partner as well as the city and NYCHA.
