Three weeks after Manhattan College sent students home to finish the semester online, one student came back to do some good amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Ellen Farrelly is a Yonkers native and chemical engineering student. She says she knew there were supplies at the college’s labs that could help health care workers protect themselves as they treat COVID-19 patients.
“I couldn't let those gloves sit there, they're much more useful in the hands of doctors and nurses right now,” said Farrelly.
After coordinating with teachers, grad students and a public safety officer to go with her, last Wednesday was collecting day.
“I had a plan and knew where everything should be,” said Farrelly.
In the end, Farrelly says she collected five boxes of masks and 50 boxes of gloves, along with seven or eight boxes of gloves that had already been opened. Some went to the Methodist Home Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, which is located right across the street from the campus.

Farrelly took on the project alone to practice social distancing and she says she is not done yet. Farrelly says she heard more boxes arrived on campus from a previous order for the environmental department and hopes to donate those as well.
