Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday that all NYPD officers and detectives will be equipped with body cameras by the end of 2018, a year earlier than expected.
The NYPD currently has about 2,500 body cameras deployed in the field. Starting this month, the department plans to issue about 800 cameras monthly, increasing to about 2,000 beginning in March.
While some celebrated the announcement, not everyone is on board.
"It makes no sense to accelerate the program while there are so many unresolved issues regarding the use of body cams, including the very basic question of whether they actually produce a meaningful change in the interaction between police officers and civilians on the street," PBA President Patrick Lynch said in a statement.
Several city officials say the advantages of body cameras far outweigh any potential disadvantages.
Officers will be required to turn on their cameras before any enforcement action is taken. The release of any footage they record will be determined on case-by-case basis.
