After a deadly fire in Midwood killed seven children in March, Mayor Bill de Blasio and other elected officials announced a multimillion-dollar initiative focusing on fire safety Monday.

The campaign is called #GetAlarmedNYC, a $4 million program designed to make sure everyone in New York City is safe from fires.

The initiative is being called the largest fire safety initiative in the country. Over 100,000 free smoke detectors were given out to New Yorkers, many of them were handed out by the mayor himself on Monday.

The mayor stressed that fire safety is not something to be taken lightly.

"Now let's be clear, smoke alarms are not a luxury, they are necessity. It is required that every homes have a smoke alarm because it's one of the most fundamental things a family can do to protect themselves," says Mayor de Blasio.

The smoke detectors given out Monday are different than what many people have at home. In these particular detectors, the battery can't be removed, but they last for 10 years.

Half of the detectors were donated by smoke detector manufacturer, Kidde.
