Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday that the Brooklyn Municipal Building will be renamed in honor of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The mayor says the building will forever honor Bader Ginsburg, who passed away Friday.

The Supreme Court justice was a Brooklyn native and graduate of James Madison High School.

"We want to make sure we honor her in every conceivable way, and especially in the borough that she came from," says Mayor de Blasio. "What an extraordinary opportunity to say to the people of Brooklyn, 'Here's one of your own, who changed the world.'"

In 2018, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams started a petition on Change.org to rename the building after Ginsburg for her 86th birthday. The petition got over 100,000 signatures and local officials and community members gathered outside the building pushing to rename it.

Mayor de Blasio said he will honor Ginsburg and her family in weeks to come. Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he will also honor Ginsburg's legacy and life with a statue in Brooklyn.
