The mother of a Black teenager who was handcuffed following a fight at the Bridgewater Commons Mall believes that her son was targeted because of his race.
The fight happened on Saturday between Kye Husain, who is Black, and another teen, who has lighter skin and may be Hispanic.
Police responded to the altercation, which was recorded on video. The video appears to show one officer pulling the other teen off Husain and then sitting the teen down on a nearby couch. Another officer then appears to throw Husain to the ground, pin him down and put him in handcuffs.
The video has angered many people around New Jersey and the nation.
“I just don’t understand it, I don’t. I keep trying to wrap my mind around it and in no possible scenario does it make sense to me. I hate to say this, but if it wasn’t for race, then what is it?” asks Ebone Husain. “What made them tackle my son, not the other kids? What made them be so aggressive with my son?”
The Bridgewater Police Department and Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the incident.
