One Morris Heights school is going above and beyond educating its students to help them fulfill a basic need.

CIS 303 Principal Monica Brady says she and her staff always want the best for their students, even if means going outside of their job descriptions.

"When kids came in over the years with dirty clothes, we had to find a way to clean them and that meant me or the principal packing up a big load of laundry and taking it home,” says Brady. "It's not fun, it's not exciting and it's certainly not part of our job title but it's something that our kids really needed."

Brady tells News 12 that the need led her to apply for Whirpool’s Care Counts program with non-profit Teach for America. The program supplies washers and dryers to schools across the country to ensure that students have access to clean clothes.

CIS 303 is the first school in the Bronx to be served by the program.

"For the five or 20 kids or 100 kids who that need this, this is a thing that will help them feel happy, feel safe, feel secure and it's a basic need,” says Brady.

News 12 is told that 22 students have already been selected to have access to the appliances.

Principal Brady says that the program is also valuable in that it is teaching students valuable life lessons. She says the school’s guidance counselor has since created a curriculum on self-care and hygiene.

Brady says she is grateful to be able to provide more than just education to her students.
