Motorcycle ride brings 'Christmas in June' to kids with special needs
It was the first weekend of summer, but Santa Claus was spotted on Long Island Sunday for a fun event for kids with special needs.
Hundreds of motorcyclists took to their bikes to deliver presents to special needs children in foster care at SCO Family Services in Sea Cliff. The event, called "Christmas in June," and included a caravan that stretched as far as the eye could see.
The bikers worked to collect more than 1,000 toys, enough to fill a whole truck. And Santa took a break from his summer vacation to get in on the fun.
It was put on by the Nassau County Fire Riders, a motorcycle club made up of volunteer firefighters and medics, and they were joined by hundreds of other bikers.
This is the twelfth consecutive year that the group has held the toy run. Members say there's nothing like the feeling you get when you hand a gift to one of the kids.
"The smiles on their faces -- it just brings a chill through your body that's incredible," says Ken Doerrbecker, of Franklin Square.
The event was also a fundraiser. The group says it collected more than $4,000 on Sunday, and all of that money goes straight to SCO Family of Services.
