New York City drivers will soon be able to pay for parking with a smartphone app.
Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Department of Transportation say the change is being made with drivers' convenience in mind.
Drivers have to register on the app with their phone number, email and license plates. Then they can pay on the fly with the app, over the internet or over the phone.
The app will alert drivers when they're running out of time, but they can also extend the parking period without going out to their cars.
The project will first begin in midtown Manhattan this summer, but will spread to all of the city's 85,000 DOT-metered parking spots.
Municipal parking meters will continue to accept coins and cards from drivers who do not use the app.
