Music can be very therapeutic and help people get through difficult times.
Music therapy is helping to heal the patients and staff at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center during the coronavirus pandemic.
Music therapist Annalissa Vicencio works with both the children and their families to bring wellness and enhance lives. She also performs community music for the staff.
“We are all as a community trying to help each other,” says Vicencio.
The medical personnel gather around the piano, and for just a moment, and say they let go of all the heaviness they carry through their day. And for the children, including those infected with COVID-19, Vicenicio works to make the hospital experience less scary.
"So if the beeping of the machines is adding to the child’s experience, I might find the key that the beeping is in and make the song to that,” says Vicencio.

She also works to connect patients that are unable to communicate with their loved ones through music, of course
"It was intended to help families connect with loved ones who are intubated and can’t speak anymore or interact in the same way and it's evolved into a song writing process where we use the heart beat as the rhythm of the song,” says Vicencio.
In times of the coronavirus where people are fighting isolation and illness, music is proving to be healing.
