The new bail reform law set to take effect next year is coming under fire from an elected official in our area.

State Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis held a press conference on Tuesday denouncing the new law. She is calling it a naive and dangerous experiment.

Earlier this year, Albany passed a major bail reform that would eliminate bail in nearly all misdemeanor cases. Those defendants would be allowed to await trial at home rather than in jail.

Progressives hailed the reform as a way to level the playing field, saying the current system is not fair for lower-income defendants who cannot afford bail.

Borough President Eric Adams spoke out in favor of it on air just last week. However, opponents, including some prosecutors and Malliotakis, say it is not the right answer.

Malliotakis introduced legislation to repeal the law, but barring a major surprise, it is set to take effect on New Year's Day.
