Squantz Pond State Park in New Fairfield and the Candlewood Lake boat ramp across Route 39 will be closed for Memorial Day weekend, officials say.

They blamed storm recovery for the closures.

They say the added holiday traffic would hamper cleanup efforts. 

The sites will reopen Tuesday.

Despite the closures, boaters turned out to Candlewood Lake anyway. Some of them told News 12 they had no idea the ramps were closed -- because there are no signs saying so in the area.

But state officials say they are closed so tree crews can finish the cleanup from last week's deadly storms.

Officials say they will deploy extra patrols to the park over the weekend to keep people out.
