The new garbage cans across the downtown area in Yonkers are getting mixed reviews from residents.
Officials say that the city is replacing trash receptacles downtown with smaller ones to make the area cleaner.
Some residents are saying that the new cans aren't big enough and there aren't enough of them.
The new garbage receptacles, which have smaller openings, are being placed around downtown Yonkers after nearly 400 garbage cans were removed in the last few months.
The move comes after the city found public garbage cans were being used as dumping grounds for local residents and business owners.

"People were bringing their household garbage down and instead of going to the back of their apartment building maybe where the garbage cans were they would just throw it in the city litter basket,” said Yonkers Commissioner of Public Works Thomas Meier.

The new garbage receptacles now have one bag as opposed to the typical can design  to prevent people from dumping big boxes and large amounts of household trash.
Currently, only 10 of the new litter baskets have been put out, leaving some frustrated and others worried that it will only lead to more litter.

"Being that they took the garbage cans up, when I want to throw something away, I can't find one,” says Andra Gray, of Yonkers.

Officials say they don't believe anyone should be carrying their garbage for blocks until they find one, saying they plan on adding up to 60 more.

While some people may have doubts about the city's latest method to deter dumping and littering, officials say they are already seeing a difference.
