Organizations all over New Jersey are looking for ways to stay engaged during the coronavirus isolation.
Almost every line of work is finding new ways of using technology to stay connected while practicing social distancing – including the New Jersey Ballet Company, which is holding classes for its members via the online meeting website Zoom.
“This is something that is really important to me and to be able to do it in the comfort of my own house and to be able to see all my friends on Zoom is really nice,” says Marina Chiafullo who is a member of the junior company of the ballet.

But conducting online dance classes is not without its challenges.
“I feel like I can’t dance full out, especially when we’re doing center because I don’t have enough room,” says dancer Colleen Fetherston. “It’s a lot of modifying what I’m used to doing.”

The New Jersey Ballet Company is best known for its annual presentation of “The Nutcracker,” in which dozens of company members perform.
Longtime company member Gabby Noa instructs the class. She says that she is finding comfort in being able to dance, even if it is from a social distance.
“It’s what we do. Dance is what we do to escape,” she says.
The ballet company will be doing online classes multiple times a week.
