A new plan to redesign traffic around Prospect Park has suggested adding bike lanes to one of the busiest avenues in Brooklyn.
At a recent Community Board 9 meeting, the biking community was out in full force to endorse a plan to add bike lanes that would run around Prospect Park, from Grand Army Plaza to Empire Boulevard.
"I've lived here my entire life so the fact there will be a bike lane here is a big improvement," said Juan Veras.
That stretch of road has seen 221 reported injuries from 2013 to 2017, with riders having to pedal between cars or on the sidewalk.
The proposal, associated with the Department of Transportation, would give cyclists two 4-foot bike lanes on the west side of the street while maintaining the flow of traffic southbound.
The initiative has been with resounding support from the community. Although there are questions concerning the effects it will have on additional traffic and maintaining historical parts of the area, potentially affect by construction on the bike path.
"We think anytime we talk about safety, it's important," said Alicia Boyd. "We think bikes lanes are important. However, we are also wanting to make sure we're saving existing structures, incorporating safety and preservation."
News 12 reached out to the DOT for a specific start time for the implementation of the bike paths. People at the meeting say it is expected to begin early next fall.
