Businesses in Coney Island that were hit hard by Superstorm Sandy are getting relief from a new program offered by the city.
The Hurricane Sandy Storefront Improvement Program is helping 13 businesses rebuild their storefronts along Mermaid Avenue.
Many stores on the street were wiped out during the storm, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.
The grants were recently given to businesses to help alleviate some of the costs and to send a message to the community that these stores are here to stay.
City officials say the program has provided more than $1 million in grants to help 72 small businesses across the city after the storm.
