A partnership between the nonprofit “Rebuilding Together NYC” and NYCHA is giving those still struggling from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy an opportunity to rebuild their lives.
Funded by a $1.4 million federal grant, the partnership launched a six-week construction training program for NYCHA residents who were impacted by Sandy. Their budding skills will be put to work and developed by providing free home repairs for low-income New Yorkers.
News 12 Brooklyn is told that around 70 residents are enrolled in the program.
“Sometimes when you keep trying and you keep getting turned away, you tend to say, 'OK, forget it,’” said Laura Boston, a Brooklyn resident who is enrolled in the program. “And I was to that point until I found this program. Now I look forward to learning what the construction field is about.”
News 12 is told that once participants complete the program, they receive a certificate and a $1,000 stipend to help them pay for entrance exams and union membership.
