The New York City Ferry is breaking barriers with its recruitment of women in a mainly male dominated industry.

According to the International Transport Workers’ Federation, women make up only 2% of the global maritime workforce.

The New York City Ferry says approximately 26% of its workforce are women.

Tasya Steer-Harrison is one of those women. She was promoted within eight months as a senior deck hand.

She says her leadership role encourages other young women to pursue a career in the maritime industry.

“The maritime industry is about 2% women in the work field, so it feel good to be a minority in both aspects,” Steer-Harrison says. “African American and female to be in a supervision position.”

The Bronx resident says her goal is to become captain of a ship.
