The New York City health commissioner met with medical providers and leaders in Brooklyn's Caribbean community on Friday to discuss the impact of Zika in Brooklyn.

Commissioner Mary Basset says the department is seeking feedback on how it's doing in getting the word out about the dangers of traveling to places associated with the mosquito-borne virus.

She says nearly 600 New Yorkers have been diagnosed with Zika because they traveled to an area with active Zika transmission. 

The commissioner emphasized that people women who are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant should avoid traveling to places where Zika is active. The same goes for their partners, as Zika can be sexually transmitted.

During the meeting, officials also discussed how language shouldn't be a barrier for people learning about the Zika virus and prevention. Fliers and other forms of information are being produced in several languages to ensure the word is spread to everyone.
